Performance Testing — What Does This Testing Field Cover?
The section below describes how the field of Performance Testing works. The conditions, sample requirements and acceptance criteria of the individual tests in this field are given on the relevant test pages.
Performance testing measures whether a product actually does the job it claims. It answers a different question from safety testing: here the real question is not "does it cause harm" but "does it do what it says".
This category is the most sensitive COMMERCIALLY, because its output is written directly onto the label and into marketing claims: energy class, capacity, efficiency, suction power, cooling capacity, cycle life, range. An incorrect or unsupported performance declaration carries the risk of enforcement under both market surveillance and consumer legislation.
The common difficulty in these measurements is that performance depends on CONDITIONS. The capacity of an air conditioner varies with outdoor temperature, the capacity of a battery with discharge rate, the suction of a vacuum cleaner with how full the bag is. Performance standards therefore define a reference condition first and describe the measurement afterwards; a performance value without stated conditions cannot be compared.
Seasonal and cyclic values are the developed form of this logic. Because efficiency measured at a single point does not represent real use, values measured under different conditions are weighted and converted into a seasonal figure. Ecodesign and energy labelling regimes use these values.
Performance and durability are separate categories and both are needed: a product may deliver its day-one performance and lose it six months later. Some regimes therefore require performance to be measured after ageing as well.
Commonly confused in this field
- A performance value without stated measurement conditions cannot be compared and cannot be used as a declaration.
- Efficiency measured at a single point does not show seasonal efficiency; a weighted calculation is required.
- A performance test does not replace a safety test; the two are separate files.
- Day-one performance does not show performance after ageing.
Which decisions these results support
- Energy label and ecodesign declarations
- Substantiation of marketing claims
- Verification of design targets
- Competitor comparison and technical sales arguments
